Peter Lee's grave at Wheatley Hill

    Peter Lee (1864-1935) the famous miners' leader was born in Trimdon Grange, County Durham. He started work as a coal miner himself in local pits aged 10, later working in the USA, and went on to become the president of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, the forerunner of the NUM or National Union of Mineworkers. He was also chair of Durham's first Labour council. Lee is buried in the cemetery in Wheatley Hill where he was very active in the parish council being responsible for much improvement in the village. In addition to holding many offices he was a preacher on the local Methodist circuit. The New Town of Peterlee, created in 1948, bears his name.
