Friar in the Monks' Cloister

  • Description

Built in the late 12th century by Bishop Hugh Le Puiset, the monastic cloisters of Durham Cathedral (a Benedictine foundation) were remodelled to their present form in the early fifteenth century, and the tracery later remodelled again between 1764 and 1769. Here, the new Catholic chaplain of Durham University, a Dominican friar, looks out onto the cloister garth.
