Former Tyne Tees Steam Shipping Co Ltd, 29 Queen Street, Newcastle upon Tyne
-
Description
Built in 1875 by R.J. Johnson for the TYNE STEAM SHIPPING COMPANY, it is so narrow (perhaps the most thinnest office block in Newcastle) as it was built on land that had been between PLUMMER CHARE and HORNSBY’S CHARE. I would imagine that this would have been built on land following the 1854 Quayside Fire. There is reference to the building being named as SEAWAY HOUSE and housed amongst others in 1879, FOREIGN PASSPORT OFFICE and the NORTH OF ENGLAND STEAM SHIP OWNERS ASSOCIATION. The Newcastle upon Tyne coat of arms is above the door to recognise the links between the then TOWN and TYNE STEAM SHIPPING Co. - around the arch are crest of the Shipping business's that were in the building. Steve Elwood Skyscraper City. Note the initials S. G. in the tympanum. -
