Co-operative Department Store, Newgate Street
-
Description
"Built in 1931-2 to a design by L G Ekins (C.W.S. Architect) for the Newcastle Co-operative Society Ltd. in the Art Deco style. There are four storeys and attics with two towers, one with a barometer [[853237]] and one with a clock [[853244]]. The building curves round the corner of Darn Crook (now St. Andrew's Street) on the right [[2189661]]. The main building was closed by the Co-op who now only retain the ground floor Food Hall. The building certainly no longer looks at its best, if it really ever did. http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm SkyscraperCity: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=50558975&postcount=159 http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=50800585&postcount=175" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2010. -
