Rodrigues, A. (2021). An Archaeological Watching Brief at Birtley Shields Farm, near Hexham, Northumberland . Archaeological Research Services. ABSTRACT: Archaeological Research Services Ltd (ARS Ltd) was commissioned by Northumbrian Water to undertake archaeological monitoring on the Birtley Shields Farm, near Hexham, Northumberland. The site lies within an area of potential archaeological sensitivity and, as such, best practice required the implementation of a scheme of archaeological monitoring to record and enhance understanding of the significance of any heritage assets to be lost during the works. The works monitored the installation of replacement water pipes in the vicinity of an Iron-Age enclosure. The archaeological watching brief took place between 15th to 30th October 2020, comprising the excavation and monitoring of trench 1 launch and receive pits (trench 2 and 3) to facilitate directional drilling as well as associated open cut excavation required for the installation of a replacement water main. Although the majority of the trench 1, 2 and 3 during the present phase of works contained no finds features or deposits of archaeological significance, except for three possible 19th century culverts. Although, this interpretation should be treated tentatively, given the relatively small footprint of the trenches excavated during the watching brief.
