The Market Hall, Hawkshead.

  • Description

The label on this painting states that this painting (seen here) is a copy of an original, painted in about 1787 when the building was newly built, encased behind the copy. For many years I thought it was probably a bad copy, and that the original must be better. I eventually looked inside the case at the original, only to find this is a perfect copy. The original is very badly decayed , and falling apart ! The building was changed in 1887, when the right hand "wing" was amended to extend the Assembly room (seen here in the centre). This work drastically altered the roof line. This is the building William Wordsworth new, when he attended the Grammar School in Hawkshead.
