Town Square, North Shields

  • Description

"The £12.994 million Transport Hub and adjoining Town Square, seen here looking towards The Beacon Shopping Centre and Bedford Street, was funded through the Transforming Cities Fund via Transport North East, the North of Tyne Combined Authority, and North Tyneside Council. Within the Town Square, and visible in the centre of the photograph, stand two artworks, both consisting of a marble monkey’s fist knot sculpture, one of which is made from white Carrara marble and one from Kilkenny black fossil granite. The monkey fist knots were used to weigh down rope when boats shared supplies and needed to anchor to shore. The new Transport Hub was opened on 2nd September 2023 with the Town Square following quickly thereafter." Photo by Geoff Holland, 2024.
