The former Drill Hall, frontage on Strand Road

  • Description

"Built in 1874 for the Carlisle Rifle Volunteers, part of a national part-time defence force. During the First World War the East Cumberland National Shell Factory occupied the building, producing up to 4,000 shells a week - for more information see English Heritage PastScape http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=1572916 (photos available at Cumbria Image Bank http://cumbriaimagebank.org.uk/ , search for Strand Road ). At other times the large hall to the rear was used for activities such as concerts, roller skating, political meetings and wrestling, most recently it was a sports centre. When this picture was taken the building was empty and dilapidated. The site has since been redeveloped by Carlisle College as a Digital and Creative Arts Centre. Most of the old structure was demolished, but this facade has been retained and incorporated into the new building - see [[4158681]] ." Photo by Rose and Trev Clough, 2013.
