Newcastle: View of St Nicholas Street from the castle
-
Description
St Nicholas Street and the Cathedral. St James' Park on the horizon (Newcastle FC). The St Nicholas building on the left was built as shops and offices around 1850 by Parnell in a Venetian Renaissance style. Considerably redeveloped with really only the facade remaining. Grade II listed: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1024772?section=official-list-entry" rel="noreferrer nofollow">historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/102477... The same view in c.1920: https://co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/resources/view/32276/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/resources/view/32276/ The castle is the remains of a Norman fortress. The roof of the Keep has commanding views of the city and the river. Today's castle is in two parts, the Keep or fortified stone tower, and the Black Gate,or gatehouse. Improbably, the railway viaduct carrying the East Coast main railway line from Newcastle to Scotland, runs between these remaining buildings. The Heart of the City Partnership is a charity that runs Newcastle Castle. https://www.newcastlecastle.co.uk/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.newcastlecastle.co.uk/ -
