Newcastle: View of Central Station from the castle
-
Description
Queen Victoria visited the station by train on 29 August 1850 and formally opened it. Designed by architect John Dobson. "Dobson's trainshed is the first of the great multi-span arched sheds of the nineteenth century." http://www.railwayarchitecture.org.uk/Location/Newcastle/Newcastle Central Station/Newcastle Central Station.htm" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.railwayarchitecture.org.uk/Location/Newcastle/Newcast... The castle is the remains of a Norman fortress. The roof of the Keep has commanding views of the city and the river. Today's castle is in two parts, the Keep or fortified stone tower, and the Black Gate,or gatehouse. Improbably, the railway viaduct carrying the East Coast main railway line from Newcastle to Scotland, runs between these remaining buildings. The Heart of the City Partnership is a charity that runs Newcastle Castle. https://www.newcastlecastle.co.uk/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.newcastlecastle.co.uk/ -
