Description
North Shields Baptist Church, build in 1846, under the direction of John Dobson. It is one of three churches attributed to Dobson within a few hundred yards, the others being the now Salvation Army on Howard Street, and St Columba's United Reformed Church in Northumberland Square. In 1851, it was one of the two largest Baptist churches in the Northern Baptist Association with 238 members. By a decade later, this had increased to nearly 300. One of the Baptist church's 20th Century ministers, Michael Taylor, was later Principal of Northern Baptist College in Manchester. Liz Edwards, minister from 1995 until 2023, oversaw a substantial refurbishment during the early part of her time at the church that included the modernisation of the sanctuary space, development of the hall at the rear of the building, and integration with the adjacent terraced house to create an office and meeting rooms. Nite Bite, a weekly meal without charge, and New to the UK, offering a welcome and essentials for those seeking asylum and refugee status, were also established during her time. -
