Grand Theatre, Cockermouth
-
Description
Located in Cockermouth, Cumbria. The Theatres Trust says the Grand Theatre was mainly a cinema from its opening in summer 1915. It had a 30ft wide proscenium and a 25ft deep stage, with four dressing rooms. The stage was never equipped with a fly tower. In 1930 it was equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system. It was operated by Graves Cinemas Ltd. from the early-1940’s. The Grand Theatre was closed in 1966. It was converted into retail use. In April, 1995 it was visited by the Cinema Theatre Association(CTA) and was then a veterinary surgery. As in August 2015, the vets have gone, but the interior is used by a lighting company named Limelighting, and retains the original curved ceiling. Their lease lasts another six years but the whole building is for sale. It is well preserved with the Grand Theatre name on the frontage, and the original grand staircase.
