THE HOME OF FEARON FALLOWS

  • Description

The plaque is mounted on the wall of the house where the great astronomer was born. Sadly Fearon Fallows had a short though successful life and is still well regarded in Cockermouth, a town whose famous sons also include Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty Fame and of course the great Lakeland poet: William Wordsworth. Both have pubs named after them in the High Street. I had hoped to visit the Wordsworth House Museum, but its always closed when I am in town! Some local information on Fearon Fallows: - "A very zealous and skilful astronomer and one of the greatest men that Cockermouth has produced. Fearon Fallows was born into humble circumstances the son of a weaver and his wife in a cottage in Low Sand Lane, now part of the Trout Hotel and almost an immediate neighbour to the house where William Wordsworth was born. Fearon Fallows was educated at Brigham School, later working at home helping his father weave to support their large family and at night studying to further his early promise in mathematics. His academic potential attracted attention and he was supported by several local businessmen contributed towards a scholarship which allowed him to go to St. John College Oxford University. He was ordained as a Church of England Minister and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society In 1821 he was appointed Director of an Observatory to be built at the Cape of Good Hope. However, he was unlucky in health and died after contracting Scarlet Fever at the age of 43".
