The Old Courthouse, 2 Main Street, Cockermouth

  • Description

"Grade II Listed former courthouse. The 1829 building was reportedly sold in 2022 in need of major structural repair having been held by the same family since the 1970s. The mixed use investment property was last occupied by five tenants, the Honest Lawyer restaurant, two hairdressers, an antiques business and a residential flat. Erosion of the riverbank had led to undermining of the rear, right hand corner of the property. Two tons of bags filled with special cement were placed under the property by divers as a temporary repair. The 1847 History and Gazetteer tells us "The old Moot Hall and the wooden Shambles, being a great nuisance to the place, were taken down in 1829, and in the same year the present convenient Court-house, or Town-hall, Bank, and News Room, were erected by subscription, at a cost of £1,300. raised in shares of £26. each, exclusive of the materials of the old Moot Hall, which were given by the earl of Egremont. They form one handsome range of white freestone buildings, on the west side of Cocker bridge, which was built, in 1828, on the site of the old one, at a cost of £2,600". Back to the courthouse, there is an approved planning application in 1978 for a change of use to retail purposes and in 1998 change of use from vacant beauty salon to bar/lounge area for adjacent restaurant by Riverside Restaurant."
