Old Milepost by the A696, Ponteland Road, Ponteland

    "Metal post with attached metal plate by the A696, in parish of PONTELAND (CASTLE MORPETH District), Ponteland Road, by parking lane before Elm Road junction, between path and wooden fence, on West side of road. Smith Patterson iron shield, erected by the Ponteland turnpike trust in the 19th century. Broken, but restored between 2009-2010. Inscription reads:- NEWCASTLE {<-arrow} 7 (BELSAY) (6¾ {arrow->}) PONTELAND 1 Maker:- SMITH PATTERSON & CO BLAYDON Northumberland HER.
