Northumberland visit May 2023 Bamburgh Castle – its history and the state rooms The magnificent staterooms tell the story of the castle’s history and, other than the usual living, dining, bedroom and kitchen areas, include an Armoury. The castle’s ancient history, originally as a fortified wooden stockade can be traced back to 547 AD and the Northumbrian kings It was later associated with the 7th century saints Oswald and Aidan, who built Lindisfarne Priory. The castle was raided by Vikings in 993 AD but became a stronghold for the Norman conquerors in the 11th century. As a royal palace, several kings stayed there – from King John up to Henry VI but the castle was destroyed during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century. The castle was restored in the 18th century. Sir William George Armstrong bought Bamburgh Castle in 1894. He set about transforming it into his vision of the archetypal castle. The staterooms show-off his unique collection of artwork, ceramics and objets d’art. The Armstrong family live in and continue to maintain and develop the castle. In recent times the castle has been used as a location in many film and television dramas. -
