Northumberland visit May 2023 Berwick-upon-Tweed From Lindisfarne, I drove the few miles north up the Ai to Berwick-upon-Tweed. I wasn’t expecting to find much to photograph, but I’d read that there is an impressive railway viaduct, a harbour and a lighthouse. The town is less than 3 miles from the border with Scotland and, for a time in its history, it was part of Scotland. It’s even further north than Copenhagen apparently. I parked close to the library and explained what I was hoping to find. The helpful librarian gave me a town map and directions to the Victorian Walk around the ancient town walks and ramparts. I was impressed by the history revealed during the walk by what I learned about how the role of the town, for more than 400 years, was fought over during border wars between England and Scotland. The ramparts were built during the reign of Elizabeth I. I didn’t get to see the harbour which was closed other than for harbour business purposes. I did see and photograph the lighthouse and the railway viaduct – plus two neighbouring road bridges across the Tweed. -
