Courtyard of Black Swan, Westgate Road
-
Description
"Just visible on the far wall of the courtyard is [[3278246]]. The courtyard features an old covered well (in the foreground). The remains of a Milecastle of Hadrian's Wall were discovered close by during conversion of the old buildings comprising 67 to 75 Westgate Road into Newcastle Arts Centre in 1985. It is known as the 'Westgate Road Milecastle' and is not numbered in the usual sequential manner. Its location on the assumed line of the Roman Wall was only 730m east of Milecastle 5 and 580m west of Milecastle 4, which puts these previously supposed sites in doubt. Behind numbers 69 to 75 Westgate Road there was once a courtyard known as Pearson's Court which had subsequently been built over. The overbuilding was removed to make Black Swan Court as a part of the Arts Centre. Shops and offices on Westgate Road were restored and improved, and at the back of the courtyard the buildings were converted into studios and workshops for artists and craft workers. During 1982-84 the foundations of a Roman Milecastle and several abandoned wells were excavated by our staff and a large find of medieval pottery was recovered. http://www.newcastle-arts-centre.co.uk/history.htm" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2012. -
