Westgate Road

  • Description

"This panorama shows some of the shops along the south side of Westgate Road in the section between Clayton Street and Grainger Street. The flat-roofed, brick building to the left is Newcastle Arts Centre, previously a mid to late C18 town house. The entrance to Forth Lane can be seen to its left [[889904]]. The tall, pink building to its right was built for Quins, bedding manufacturers in a French style and has a top cornice made of white faience, which is decorative pottery. The contrasting buildings to the right are late C18th town houses with C19th shop fronts which have been recently restored by the Arts Centre. One external period feature is the chimney stacks placed along the roof ridges rather than at the ridge ends which was the later Victorian style." Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2010.
