  • Description

Views of and from the road deck of the High Level Bridge across the River Tyne between Gateshead and Newcastle. 12 November 2022. A view of the (lower) road deck of the High Level Bridge, the first of its kind in the world. This view is taken looking south from Newcastle to Gateshead, and is of the walkway on the east side. Road traffic is only permitted southbound and is confined to local buses, taxis and cycles. There are pedestrian walkways on either side. Above is a railway carrying two tracks. The Grade I Listed structure was designed by Robert Stephenson and was opened for use on 7 June 1849, although a formal ceremony was presided over by Queen Victoria later in the year.
