Boarstone House, Deadwater

  • Description

"Photo taken from the road bridge over Deadwater Burn, on the west boundary of Kielder Forest. Alongside the trees on the right, an old track, The Wheel Causeway, followed now by a bridleway, fords Deadwater Burn east of the farm and climbs Deadwater Rigg to cross the Border into Scotland at Turfy Knowe. Heading north, often now indistinguishable and often hidden in new forest plantation, it crosses Myredykes Muir, passes the ancient site of Wheel Kirk and the associated deserted village below Watch Knowe, rising steeply to cross the hills between Needs Law and Wheelrig Head. The Wheel Causeway is an old cross-Border road, probably in use during the 13th Century. It provided a passage over the Cheviot Hills for the longer route between Carlisle and Jedburgh. Edward I of England ame this way in May 1296 and in 1533 it was used for a raid by the English into Scotland, and probably many other times by the Border Reviers of both sides."
