2-8 Grey Street, NE1

  • Description

"Built in 1842 by John Dobson for Richard Grainger, this was the last piece of Grey Street to be completed. Because of the existence of earlier cellars and the diminutive appearance of the block, it has been suggested that Grainger may not have demolished the 18th C building existing on the corner, but merely dressed it up in stone and refurbished the interior. There are four bays on Grey Street, but only one on Mosley Street - see also [[4409001]] (which is opposite). In the late 1990s, a proposed redevelopment would have involved demolition and replacement by a design based on what Grainger himself might have built. But this was dropped in favour of repair and conversion to a hotel. The building is Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1024877 . The photo shows how 10 Grey Street - the single bay to the north (behind the white car) - connects with 21 Mosley Street: see [[4411174]].
