Culverted Watercourse at Furness Abbey

  • Description

"In mediæval times abbeys, such as this one at Furness, would be built close to a source of running water as it was such an essential requirement for many everyday purposes. Mill Beck runs through the eastern side of the abbey site, sometimes running in a culvert beneath the buildings. As well as supplying water for drinking, cooking, washing and flushing the latrines, the stream also provided the energy to power a mill owned by the abbey a little further downstream."
