Furness Abbey, Mill Beck

  • Description

"In mediæval times abbeys, such as this one at Furness, would be built close to a source of running water as it was such an essential requirement for many everyday purposes. Mill Beck runs through the eastern side of the abbey site. As well as supplying water for drinking, cooking, washing and flushing the latrines, the stream also provided the energy to power a mill owned by the abbey a little further downstream."
