Temperley Memorial Fountain

Description
"....Large ornamental red sandstone drinking fountain. A square platform pedestal with copper plaques on each face decorated with the arms of Hexham and Northumberland and floral motifs is surmounted by an octagonal quatrocento-style column with Ionic pilasters on four sides and carved low relief decorations on the others (on the south east the English rose and crown, on the north east the lion and thistle of Scotland, on the south west the harp and shamrock of Ireland, and on the north west the harp and leek of Wales). Above the column are tented pediments surmounted by a consoled drum decorated with shields of the four countries of Great Britain (lions rampant, harp, and St Andrew’s Cross) on top of which is a small cupola decorated with the arms of the Sees of York, Durham, Newcastle and Carlisle. This in turn is topped by a small dentil dome surmounted by a stone cross painted in gilt...." (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) -
