"This inscribed stone, with the City of Newcastle coat of arms, is part of the [[4285179]]. During the English Civil War, Newcastle supported the king and in 1644 the city was besieged for many months. The grateful King bestowed the motto "Fortiter Defendit Triumphans" ("Triumphing by a brave defence") on the town.
