The 'Dirty Bottles' window, Alnwick

  • Description

"A slightly bizarre feature of Alnwick is this window to the 'Dirty Bottles' pub on Narrowgate. The window & contents behind it have not, reportedly, been touched since 1725. The landlord of what was then 'The Cross' pub dropped dead when cleaning them & they were declared to be cursed. In my 1998 photo the wording above the window is in an attractive 'Olde English' style typeface, more recent photos on this site show that was replaced by a mundane & totally out-of-character Helvetica-style typeface!"
