Text Appearing Before Image: an important district of tlie county into Morecambe Bay. Tlie moist climateis more favourable to cattle-breeding than to agriculture. Tbs mineral productsinclude lead, a little copper and iron, beautiful marble, and roofing slate. Themanufactures are on a small scale. Kendal, the only large town of the county, stands on the declivity of a hillnear the banks of the river Kent, which flows into Morecambe Bay at MUnthorpe,the only seaport. It is a prosperous place, with various scientific institutions,and the ruins of a castle in which Catherine Parr was born. The woollenindustry introduced by Flemish weavers in the fourteenth century still flourishes,and, in addition to cloth, there are manufactures of linseys, carpets, fancystuffs, combs, fish-hooks, and clogs. But that which has made its reputationis the beautiful country in which it is situate. The river Kent, after whichthe town is named, rises in a small lake, the Kentmere ; but the lake in this Fii?. 141.—The Head of Windermere. Text Appearing After Image: neighbourhood most sought after is the Windermere. Boicncss and Ambleside,on its shore, are villages of hotels, aflording ample accommodation to thecrowds of tourists who visit them. Even more romantic are the environs ofGrasitiere, at the head of a small lake which drains into Windermere, and in themidst of the most impressive mountain scener}. Wordsworth lived at theneighbouring hamlet of Rydal, and he and Coleridge are buried in the churchyardof St. Oswald. Kirkby Lonsdale, in the fertile valley of the Lune, is the only other place ofnote in the southern portion of the county. Carpets and blankets are manu-factured, and marble is quarried there. Applehij, beautifull}^ situated on the river Eden, is the principal town in thenorthern part of the county, and its capital.
