Detail of Smardale lime kiln

  • Description

"This shows the bowl at the top of one of the kilns, the other having a semi mature tree growing out of it. The bowl is completely infilled with rubble, although a few fire bricks are still visible. As this was an industrial site, it's likely that coal would have been the main fuel as it is as easy to bring coal in as it is to take lime out." Photo by Gordon Hatton, 2019.
