The Old Open-Air Bathing Pool at Grange-Over-Sands

  • Description

Partly frozed and deeply uninviting, not a lot remains of this beautful old 1930s swimming pool at Grange-Over-Sands. The former filtered seawater lido, built in 1932, closed in 1993 and has become increasngly isolated and derelict since. Pictures of it's under-cover replacement, Berners Pool, now also closed, can be found in this set. The latest development plans include conservation of some of the structure, which will be converted into a sunked landscaped garden, together with building a new pavillion, RSPB centre and community arts centre. A mixed reprieve I think, sad that the glorious bathing days will never be restored, but good that the area will be regenerated and the historical feature not completely forgotten within the new development.
