This was formerly done with the aid of the horse-gin,now replaced by thejsteam-engine; and, by the material raised, 154 OUR IKON KOAIS. the engineer and the contractor learn the nature of the stratathrough which they have to pass. The shafts arc usually some9 feet in diameter, including the brickwork lining laid in cement9 inches in thickness. The ends of the bricks are towards theshaft. The brickwork of the sides is built in sections as theworkmen descend ; and when the shaft is carried to its full depththe lining, as it is called, is complete. When the shaft is finishedthe men proceed to execute the lateral excavations by first form-ing a drift way along the level of the upper part of the futuretunnel, and this is sometimes continued through its entire length.It also has the advantage of showing the character and positionof the strata, and the obstacles to be overcome. A driftway isoccasionally made before the contract for the tunnelling is let.
