Having completed his observations, and collected the infor-mation of his assistants, the engineer sums up the evidence, andmarks out the route which the line shall take ; and few are theinstances in which the decisions thus arrived at have been opento subsequent impeachment. Rivers and streams are crossedas near their sources as possible ; hills and valleys are skirted ;towns and places where land is expensive are cautiously ap-proached ; pleasure grounds and gentlemens seats are avoided ;and a general estimate is made for setting off the amount ofcuttings or embankments as nearly as possible against oneanother. Text Appearing After Image: A LEVELLING PARTY. The route of the line must now be surveyed and levelled withthe utmost precision. Surveying may be described as the artof determining the form and dimensions of tracts of ground,with any objects that may exist thereupon. A representationon paper is made of all these objects, and also a delineation ofthe slopes of the hills, as the whole would appear if projected ona horizontal plane. The ground has also to be levelled in orderthat it may be ascertained how much higher or lower is anygiven point on the surface of the earth from any other. Theengineer is thus able to adopt measures for reducing the wholeof the new line to a level, or to such gradients as may bedeemed most expedient to adopt. F 66 OUR [RON koads.
