Houghton School House

  • Description

"The Old Schoolhouse was built as a house in 1800. In 1824 it became a school, endowed by Mrs Margaret Bewick of Close House, primarily for the children of the estate, to be educated at her expense. It remained the only school in the parish until the first 'voluntary' school was established in Heddon in 1852, by the Church of England.
