Text Appearing Before Image: d upon howwisely and cheaply they were able to buy both provender andanimals, how they classified the animals and the work that theyhad to do. He thought it more important to try and establish acorrect basis upon which to feed them, and it must not be for-gotten that horses, like themselves, would benefit by having theirfood varied from time to time rather than by always feeding themon hard-and-fast lines; such variations of the food to depend onthe work required, also to follow the market fluctuations as wellalso as to benefit the animals. It was also important to rememberin changing the proportions of provender to do so by gentle degreesand not to make sudden changes—such for instance as from 15per cent, or 20 per cent, of maize to say 35 per cent, of maize. The Secretary read the minutes of the last General Meeting,and reported the proceedings of the Council at their meetings onNovember 30th and that day. DEATH OF MESSRS. F. N. WARDELL ANDW. BEATTIE SCOTT. . The President (Mr. J. G. Weeks) said that the Institute hadbeen deprived by death of two of its honorary members—Messrs.F. N. Wardell and W. Beattie Scott. Both were H.M. inspectors ofmines; indeed,Mr.Wardell was senior of the inspectors of mines,having been appointed in 1867.
