    "...Heworth stone cross on tapering shaft on a tall square pedestal and two shallow steps. There is a carved laurel wreath at the foot of the shaft on all 4 sides. Below each wreath is a shield, three of which between them bear the words 'Dulce et decirum est pro patria mori'. Dark grey marble plaques are on all 4 sides of the base. One bears the dedication, and one the quotation. The WW1 names are on the two side plaques. WW2 names are on smaller plaques aded to the bottom on the 2 side faces. Lettering is in elaborate Roman capitals with a few words in Gothic for the dedication...."
