Thecontents of the second volume encompassedeighty years. Into this, the third collection, ithas not been found practicable to compress theannals of much more than half a century.Commencing with the year 1581, in the middle of Queen Elizabethsreign, the book ends with the year 1640, when religious differenceswith Scotland, and grievances at home, were driving both kingdomsinto Civil War. During the greater portion of this period the records show us thepeople of Tyneside engaged in extending their trade, and developingnew branches of industry. The later years of Elizabeth, and thereign of James the First, were not fruitful in imperial events thatspecially affected the Northern counties, or interfered with the com-mercial progress of Northern communities.
