Text Appearing Before Image: e drapers company of Newcastle— No brother of the fellowship now, or hereafter, shall take orreceive for his apprentice, any more than one apprentice, before thathis apprentice now present being bound to him for the term before inthis order mentioned, have served his master by the term of six yearsfully to be expired, ended, and run ; otherwise the offender, being abrother of the company, and so offending, shall forfeit and pay to theuse of the company of this said fellowship for every offence so by himcommitted, 10/. without any further delay. Also it is agreed andordained that all such apprentice as is to be or enjoy any freedomamongst the fellowship aforesaid shall, within one whole year after theexpiration of his indenture, come in to the said company for hisfreedom, or else to pay for his offence in not doing the same the sumof 26s. 8d. And also, if any do challenge their freedom by patrimony,and not coming in upon lawful warning, he shall pay for his offencethe sum of 33s. 4d. Mayor and Sheriff of Newcastle till Michaelmas:— William Riddell, Mayor, and Henry Mitford, Sheriff. Mayor and SJieriff elected at Michaelmas:—Mayor—Henry Anderson. Arms : Gules, three oak trees argent, acorned or. Sheriff—Roger Nicholson. Arms: Argent, on a pale sable, three martlets or ; in sinister chief a mullet of the second. O date of incorporation of the company of bakers andbrewers of Newcastle has been recorded, but an oldordinary of the society, now lost, appears to have beenin their possession in this year, 1583, and long after-wards, as several entries in the old books testify. Marcli 3. Bernard Gilpin, rector of Houghton-le-Spring, the apostle of thenorth, died.
