Arms : As in 1606, with a crescent in chief sable. Sheriff—Alexander Davison. Arm s : Or, a fess wavy between six cinquefoils gules. Y lapse of time, and the treachery or fraud of pastofficers, the hospitals of Newcastle and Gates-head had fallen into an unsatisfactory condition,and great complaints were made respectingthem. The corporation of Newcastle wereagreed that reformation must be had, and theyapplied for letters patent to refound these charities,and reorganise them upon a wider and moreuseful basis. In their books, under date 28th March, appearsthe following appointment of a committee of seven to conductnegotiations :— Text Appearing After Image: i6ii.] SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. 191 Whereas divers and sundry business of importance concerningthe general state of this corporation, especially the establishingand settling of the foundations of the several hospitals of theblessed Virgin Mary called the West Spittle in Westgate, SaintMary Magdalene at the Barras, the hospital or chapel at theTyne bridge end, and the hospital of Saint Edmunds in Gates-head, in the county of Durham, belonging this said town, are tobe performed and effected at London with all convenient speed, ofwhich and of the manner and orderly proceedings whereof considera-tion hath been in some measure had and taken by us, yet not so fullyconcluded as is requisite, and therefore thought fit and so ordered byus, the mayor, aldermen, and sheriff, and rest of the common councilof the town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, for and in the name, stead, andplace of the mayor and burgesses of the same town, that the furtherhandling and proceeding in the same shall be in the consideratio Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work. -
