Arms of both Mayor and Sheriff the same as in 1598. ELDARD ALVEY was formally instituted to theliving of St. Nicholas in the autumn. Thebishop of Durham apparently did not hurry theprocess, and in November the king wrote himrather sharply on the subject :— Whereas Alvy,a man (as we hear) without exception, is pre-sented by the bishop of Carlisle, the undoubtedpatron of the vicarage of Newcastle, we requireyou to give him, the said Alvy, institution without delay, that thechurch may not suffer by the ordinarys default, who should rather be Text Appearing After Image: 302 NEWCASTLE AND GATESHEAD. [1631. careful for the speedy supply thereof, etc. The bishop replied thathe had instituted Alvey before his majestys letter arrived, andrespecting the delay, explained that he understood that one of hisofficers had been entreated by Dr. Jacksons servant, who orderethhis estate, that he would defer the acceptance of Dr. Jacksonsresignation until after Easter, January 30. The mayor, etc., of Newcastle, write to the privy council that oneof his majestys servants, John Le Neve, has been to Newcastle witha patent directing the execution of the statute of 33 Henry VIII., forshooting with the long-bow. The statute has long slept, and is verypenal. Since the use of muskets, the use of bows and arrows is quitegone out. The town and country are utterly destitute of bowycrsand fletchers, and bow-staves and all other necessaries, ,and arecharged with [muskets, pikes, corslets, and other arms.
