Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Newcastle
-
Description
"The mediaeval hospital was a religious community as well as a hospital in the modern sense. The Hospital of St Mary the Virgin in Westgate was founded in the 12th century "to serve God and the poor, and to be a place of entertainment for the indigent clergy and such pilgrims as are passing this way". The mayor and corporation of Newcastle held the right to appoint the master, which they retained after the dissolution of the monasteries. It was customary to hold a feast there following the election of the mayor and other town officers. From the 1600s the buildings were used by the Free Grammar School...." -
