Spa Well Info Board at Spittal

  • Description

"Near here is the Spa Well valued as a source of iron, lime, magnesia and sulphate of soda. It was one of the attractions which along with sea- bathing helped Spittal grow into a holiday resort in the early 1800's. After the invention of the Railway in 1847, summer visitors came in increasing numbers. Spittal was a very popular day out by train. The building of the New Town began in 1837 when many more large stone houses were built, many to accommodate the large numbers of holiday visitors who came to enjoy the pleasures of the coast."
