Melmerby washfold
-
Description
"Up until the 1920s sheep were gathered here, to be washed in the dammed-up beck before shearing. The structure was restored in 2002 as part of the Cumbria-wide 'Sheepfolds' sculpture project, created by artist Andy Goldsworthy (information here http://www.sheepfoldscumbria.co.uk ). The artist placed a stone, carved with descending circular holes, in the dub (pool) where the sheep were plunged (explanatory article here http://www.sheepfoldscumbria.co.uk/html/news/news01d.htm )."
