War memorial lychgate, Skelton churchyard
-
Description
"The entrance to the grounds of St Michael's Church. The lychgate was erected in 1920, in remembrance of the nine men from this parish who gave their lives in the Great War. Their names are carved in the sandstone surround of a seat inside the gateway. There are inscriptions on the woodwork above the arch - for details see IWM war memorials register https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/3121 and War Memorials Online https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/119500 . A brief inscription was added to remember those who died in the 2nd World War, but they have their own memorial in the village bus shelter - see [[5971112]] . The war memorial lychgate is a grade II listed building - see Historic England for particulars https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1412139 . The architect was JH Martindale of Carlisle, who also designed similar-looking gates at Wetheral (photo https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5127932 ) and Barton (photo http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4683802 ).
