Sir Ralph Harbottle of Beamish 1443-1504
-
Description
Beamish Hall, or at least the original building and lands, were in the possession of the Harbottle family for over 100 years from 1400 to 1527. The most notable Harbottle to be associated with Beamish Hall, was Sir Ralph Harbottle of Beamish who fought at the Battle of Towton. (See: https://www.towton.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/database_war_roses_combatants.pdf). Sir Ralph also participated at the Battle of Bosworth having pledged loyalty to King Richard III.(see http://www.r3.org/richard-iii/the-battle-of-bosworth/the-ballad-of-bosworth-field/). He was married to Lady Margaret Percy. Upon the death of the last of the male heirs of the Monboucher family, Isabel de Montboucher, the last surviving daughter of Sir Bertram Monboucher, married Robert Harbottle of Preston MP (see: History of Parliament on line https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/harbottle-robert-1419). Beamish Hall formed part of the dowry of Isabella Montboucher and as such came into the possession of Robert Harbottle in 1400. It remained in the Harbottle family until the death of George Harbottle, who died, without issue, in 1525. George was the legitimate son of Sir Guiscard Harbottle, who was killed at the battle of Flodden.
