The 'Spire' in Spire Wood

  • Description

"I only became aware of this remarkable folly when I spotted the word 'Spire' on the map as we approached from the south. It sits on a small, wooded knoll and is just about visible from below when the leaves are off the trees (before they grew tall it must have commanded a much wider view and been a prominent local landmark). On 'British Listed Buildings' it is suggested that 'History unknown but possibly built by James King of Finsthwaite House, who built the nearby Pennington Lodge Tower' [[1447088]]. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-421446-the-spire-colton-cumbria There is a small recess high in the north side but no inscriptions (graffiti apart) that we could see."
