Stenkin

  • Description

"'Stane Wegin' or Stony Road in Old Norse. A former shepherds cottage attached to West Head Farm which was apparently pointlessly demolished by Manchester Corporation. The ruins of the farm are visible a few yards away. The farm was in the 1920s one of the largest sheep farms in the Lakes with over 4000 Herwdicks. Nowadays United Utilities are in command, they specialise in erecting signs advising what you cannot do in the area. They apparently shoot deer all year round here and therefore warn you to stay on the paths despite this being access land. Fortunately today I did not use their Legalised Highway Robbery Pay and Display Car Park at Steel End." Photo by Michael Graham, 2007.
