DONALD CAMPBELL MEMORIAL

  • Description

This memorial seat in Coniston seems a disappointing tribute for Donald Campbell who died on 04/01/1967attempting to break his own world speed water record on Coniston Water . I remember it well the whole tragedy being televised shocked the nation. His boat was called Bluebird and has recently been salvaged, museums spring up, real ales are brewed and poor Donald is now part of the Lakeland Heritage Industry. The plaque on the right of the picture commemorates Leo Villa who was the Chief Engineer for the ill-fated record attempt.
