"The Theatre Royal is a Grade I listed building (English Heritage List Entry Number: 1145840 http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=1145840&resourceID=5 ) situated on Grey Street. It was designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green as part of Richard Grainger's grand design for the centre of Newcastle, and was opened on 20 February 1837 The interior of the building was destroyed by a huge fire in 1899 ( http://www.theguardian.com/uk/the-northerner/2011/sep/09/theatre-royal-newcastle-frank-matcham-grey-street-wakefield-blackpool-firth-carpets The Guardian).
