    Thayendanegea, aussi appelé Brent (1742 1817) appartient à la nation mohawk. Ce valeureux guerrier est un personnage important, mais controversée de cette période plutôt difficile de l'histoire du continent. Inspiré par la révolution américaine, en 1775 1776, il se rend à Londres pour défendre la souveraineté de son peuple dans un paysage politique en mutation. Romney a soigneusement dépeint sa tenue et révéler la complexité de son identité qui, ancrée dans son héritage indigène, témoigne aussi de son alliance avec les britanniques. Thayendanegea porte au cou une petite croix et un hausse-col en argent, ou plaque d'armure, cadeau de George III à son allié, il tient à la main un calumet Tomahawk - un objet rituel puissant qui symbolise à la fois la guerre et la paix entre les différentes nations.
