WWI-StourportScarborough-1915-1-30-Scan 19

  • Description

On 16 Dec 1914, two German battleships off the coast bombarded the English towns of Scarborough, Hartlepool, and Whitby. Beginning at 8am, in about a half-hour over 500 shells were rained down on Scarborough, causing considerable damage and killing 17 residents. This was the first attack of the war on British soil. This card was mailed from Stourport to the family in Basel (I think actually to a maid or housekeeper, the relationship is unclear from the names) on 30 Jan 1915, with the message, "Your turn I think!"
